Javelin Carnival starting as a part of programme on Finland 100 years

47 th Javelin Carnival starts tomorrow with a great amount of throwers and javelin friends once again in Pihtipudas. Five days of javelin school provides to it’s participants top-level coaching, training and social life with the javelin family. We have about 200 participants in the javelin school, of which almost 40 throwers and coaches come from foreign countries.

This year is very special, because we are celebrating 100 years of Finland’s independency. Javelin Carnival is a part of programme on Finland 100 years. With respect to that, we have many special themes and topics in the carnival program:

  • Every thrower has a goal of 100 training throws during the javelin school.
  • 100 meters challenge competition, meaning a sum of throwing results of both hands. Results over 100 m will be awarded! In this event Finland had an Olympic gold medal in 1912 by Julius Saaristo with result of 109,42 m. Competition is free to register for those who want to participate.
  • Javelin Succes over 100 years -statistics book on sale. Book is published in 2015 but is still very timely, especially in centenary of Finland’s independence.
  • 100 photographs of the history of Finnish javelin throwing. In Javelin Museum visitors will experience a time travel into Finnish javelin history via old photos and sporting items.

The last highlight of Javelin Carnival will be the main competitions for male and female on Sunday. More information about that one will find on these pages in upcoming days. Welcome to Pihtipudas to see who will be the king and queen this year!

Javelin school gathers over 200 participants to Pihtipudas

There are over 200 young javeling throwers signed up for Pihtipudas Javelin Carnival’s javelin school. With competition throwers there will be over 250 throwers and coaches gathering up to Pihtipudas. Over 60 of them come from abroad, which is the biggest amount ever.

Javelin Carnival starts on Wednesday 29 June with competitions for age groups from 9 to 15 years old. Competitions continue on Thursday for 17-22 years old, and javelin school starts for the younger ones on Thursday, too.

In the latest years there have been more and more foreign throwers coming to Pihtipudas. The biggest group of javelin throwers come from Great Britain. And, it’s especially the Finnish javelin throwing culture that brings them here.

– Being able to immerse yourself in the Finnish Javelin culture for 1 week each year is hugely inspiring and powerful. This rubs off on coaches, athletes and parents that travel with us to the Carnival. This in turn starts to help the momentum build in the UK, tells javelin coach David Parker.

On Saturday javelin school students will meet Antti Ruuskanen, as well as, Uwe Hohn, the holder of the longest official javelin throw ever.  On the same day, there will be also a lecture given by Åsmund Martinsen, the coach of Andreas Thorkildsen.

The main competitions on Sunday will be lacking of throwers, as the best European throwers will concentrate for the European Championships the next week. Still, womens’s A-final will be very good with a few outside Europe throwers as Li Lingwei (65,11 m), the winner of Pihtipudas 2015 Kelsey-Lee Roberts (63,92 m) and Kathryn Mitchell (66,10 m).

Javelin Winter Championships on 23rd January 2016

Championship meeting for winter javelin will take place in Tampere already on 23rd January 2016. This time there won’t be a javelin school together with the winter championships, because of many coincidences. Signing up for the winter championships is to be done via kilpailukalenteri.fi.
